Summer 2019 Engagement Scholarship Recipient
This study abroad experience has helped me flourish in the field of archaeology and also learn a new culture in Huyalcan, Peru. We have spent the first couple of days exploring Lima, Caraz, and the countryside of Peru looking at various archaeological sites from different cultures throughout history! We saw impressive pre-ceramic burial mounds that were more than 3000 years old. We also saw an ancient plaza/ ceremonial site that was used by different cultures in Lima for over 2000 years. This was so wonderful and this study abroad session has really opened my eyes to this ancient world that is still here today. I love archaeology and it’s the only thing I have ever wanted to do in my life.
This scholarship helped me afford all the Soles I needed for spending money in Peru as well as helping me pay a couple of bills back home in Minnesota, while I’m gone. This has been so helpful and a wonderful experience. I truly feel capable of being able to get a job in this field once I gradurate from the University of Minnesota just because of the great connections and experience I am gaining here and can use in my professional career as an Archaeologist. This has been such a wonderful journey and has pushed me out of my comfort zone but I can still do something amazing and feel comfortable in my field. I have been having a blast with the people and Dr. Rebecca Bria has made me feel welcome and so able to be the best that I can be. This has honestly opened my eyes and my heart to the word of possibilities and opportunities out there for me.
