Pablo Gomez

Spring 2019 Engagement Scholarship Recipient

During the time my family and I were undergoing financial insecurity, I was strongly debating to whether continue being an RV in HCMC’s Emergency Department or spend more time working at my current job. The PES Student Engagement Scholarship finalized my decision by aiding me in covering expenses for the commute, to and from the hospital, as well as help make up some of the days I was not able to work.  This allowed me to continue doing research in the Emergency Department’s fast paced environment during the “Winternship” when many RVs had already gone home for the holidays. By continuing the “Winternship,” RVs were allowed to shadow a physician.

In February, I will be able to shadow an Emergency Medicine/Internal Medicine physician, Dr. Matthew Prekker and learn about the duties of the career path I want to follow in the next few years. The knowledge gained from working with physicians, nurses, EMTs, HCAs, and other RVs in the Emergency Department, where I spent over 150 hours doing research for the advancement of medicine, made this research opportunity one that I am proud to be a part of.
