Spring 2019 Engagement Scholarship Recipient

The history of South Africa is very rich and interesting. I have read books about their struggles and apartheid as well as about their leaders like Nelson Mandela and Desmond Tutu. Being in South Africa is a surreal moment. The country is very beautiful with wonderful beaches and mountains. The people are also very nice and always willing to help even though they don’t always understand what I’m saying. The country amazingly boasts of 12 official languages. In spite of all these beautiful things, there are many problems in South Africa. There are numerous disparities and problems involving race. This study abroad program has slowly been introducing me to these problems and into the everyday South African culture. This program has helped me start my journey towards advocacy and social justice. My pursuit of a career in public health has been further strengthened by understanding the social justice work that we’re exploring here in South Africa.

My time in Cape Town has been extraordinary. I am truly blessed to be visiting this beautiful city and interacting with its friendly residents. Ever since my arrival, I have experienced this beautiful city in many forms. The Nest, my residence, provides a spectacular view of Table mountain and my time in the mountains did not fail to disappoint. It is also wonderful to have a group of people who I have connected with and formed a strong bond with as we learn about South Africa. They have truly played an important role in helping adjust and feel welcome here.
